The Moon Masters 197: She’s his beard
Thanks to SlingBlade for slinging us an FU. We talked about getting a speeding ticket in Ohio, U-haul sucks, government criminals, Apoc’s iPad, Michael Cera typecast (and sucks), and Mick Aloha’s upcoming Japan visit.
Wiki for this episode.

Apoc, the reason my app isn’t on the store any longer is essentially as Mick said. To keep an app on the store, you’re required to pay Apple $100 per year for membership in their developer program. This applies even if your app is free.
While I now have a job (internship) which pays pretty decently, I’m also paying a lot more in rent than I was last year, because I no longer have a roommate. I’m not broke or anything, but I don’t feel like I can justify the $100 fee at this time, especially given the distaste that being an iPhone developer gave me for Apple’s policies. Oh, and the fact that the game has brought in more than $100 in revenue, of which I’ve not seen (and never will see) a penny due to Apple’s payment policies.
I’d like to re-release Puzzle Panel at some point and just make it free and open source. I don’t know when/if/in what format that will happen, though. Updating the codebase for the new OS and new versions of the underlying frameworks would take a significant amount of time. I’ll let you know if anything changes.
Incidentally, the piracy never bothered me overmuch. I found it a little unfortunate that people would go out of their way to pirate at 99-cent app by an independent developer, but in general I’m not philosophically opposed to piracy. I don’t generally partake in it myself, but I don’t think it’s something worth getting morally outraged over.
I can’t believe you haven’t made any money (cash, in hand) on your app. That’s crazy.
I checked, and its still available for download on Installous if anyone cares. Personally I still have it installed on my phone (a perfectly legal copy).
Basically you have to make a certain amount ($150, I think) in a given territory before you get paid out for that territory. While I’ve made over $100 total (I don’t have exact numbers), that’s across several countries, so I haven’t been paid. I knew about it going in, so I can’t complain too much, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a shitty policy.
