I admit it, I’m slow. Two Fridays ago (August 11) I attended the 23rd Northwest Ohio Rib-Off. Care to take a guess at who sponsered the event? That’s right! It was United Health Services, a company that owns and runs hospitals. I’m predicting next year they’ll sponser the Northwest Ohio Glass Eating Competition and maybe the William Tell Archery and Firearm Festival. Probably just a coincidence. Anyway, I attended with some friends, an appetite and three beers under my belt (not literally). The main attraction besides the ribs was America’s favorite classic rock superstars, Grand Funk Railroad. Now it’s been said already, but Grand Funk was neither grand nor funky. They’re sound man must have been preoccupied with the ribs or beers or something because the sound quality was terrible. So much bass that it was drowning out the rest of the band and rattling my internal organs something aweful. We quickly relocated to a spot with better acoustic properties and it turned out to be alright. They played American Band and some other stuff that I don’t recall. The best part of the night was the company, conversation, cold brews and ribs. I actually waited until having three more brews before taking the first bite of meat and it was worth the wait. I started with a Texas Thunder sampler which was two and a half ribs for $3. That was followed up with a sampler from Pigfoot which consisted of three ribs for the same price. Pigfoot was much better. They served you plain ribs and you got to apply whatever and however much sauce you so desired. I applied all the sauces at once and it was good. Pigfoot didn’t win officially, but they won me over.

Now part two of my three parter here is about the incredibly loud insect known as the cicada. I don’t have much to say except they’re loud and consistent.

Listen to the cicadas

It’s not annoying or anything, but I am made aware for the last six hours before the sun goes down that the males are looking for some action. I’m hoping they score soon!

Part three. I recently bought two more items in a whimsical fashion and neither of them was aloe juice. The first being a set of DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) mats. I’ve seen videos of people playing and it always looked pretty fun to me. The only place around town I’ve seen that has a DDR machine is the Showcase Cinemas in Maumee. I wasn’t about to go try it for the first time in a public place surrounded by kids who could do it while blindfolded or juggling fire, so I figured I’d try this in-home option. The price was right so I went for it. So far I must say this is pretty damn fun. The game I’m playing is actually called StepMania, which looks to me like the exact same thing as DDR. It’s free and all the song/step files are free so you can’t beat that. Even though it’s just jumping around like a fool I am enjoying it quite a bit. The second purchase was that of a cold drink. City Slicker Malt Liquor.

I couldn’t resist and again I’m glad I went for it because it was mighty tasty. I guess I just enjoy the simple pleasures in life such as a walk in the park, a cold drink on a hot day and jumping around like a freak.
